Closeup of the Elbow joint. The radial head is capped with a layer of articular cartilage and a replaceable gel pack sits inside the Trochlear notch for smooth joint rotation.
Upper body muscle prosthetic. The muscles are made from layered strips of carbon nanotube aerogel attached to a metal skeleton via an artificial periosteum coating on the bones.
By matching the number and arrangement of muscles found in human arms this prosthetic is intended to give back the user their full range of natural movement.
A guideline workflow I developed to help internal and outsource Concept Artists produce component designs for Star Citizen.
This Russian Doll approach was intended to reduce the amount of work needed to produce a range of components by reusing design elements. These rough component concepts were also built following the Custom Normals workflow used on Star Citizen. This allowed the concept meshes to be instantly dropped into CryEngine to be previewed by the directors. Many of the concept meshes that were built this way were even used in the marketing videos for the ship sales.

A re-imagining of the boss "Mobile Type 8" from my favorite game Final Fantasy VIII.
Rather than just making a high poly version of the original design I wanted to produce something that reflected my own impression of the character.
When you encounter him in Lunatic Pandora you aren't given any backstory. I always imagined this wasn't really the kind of weapon that would be deployed on a battlefield. It looked more ceremonial and while it was equipped with powerful weapons it probably would almost never use them as it was more a symbol of the power of the people who had constructed it.
I kept this idea in mind when working on this redesign and avoided adding elements that would contradict this concept such as caution decals.
I also took inspiration from the "Black Boa" from Spirits Within. In particular its snub sensor nose and wing like engines.
The final level of Killzone Mercenary
Internal Torpedo Launcher concept for the Retaliator. Original Retaliator concept by Ryan Church.
Visual development of the Shubin mining station for Squadron 42.
This 6km long station was an interesting challenge. The player can fly around and land anywhere. The design is intended to carve up the 3d space in an interesting way. While building the concept mesh I would occasionally export it into CryEngine and fly around inside one of the ships to get a sense of the views the player would end up getting.
Some console prop design for Killzone
A turret concept for a Capital Class Ship in Star Citizen.
Internal components of the Anvil Gladiator.
Original ship design by David Hobbins
I worked to make these technical illustrations as convincing as possible. It was fun to see them picked up and published by the American magazine Popular Science.
